Another UN scandal

Last week, while the world’s eyes were on Gaza, Iran was chosen to chair the governing board of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

UNDP, often referred to as a UN-flagship, is one of the most important UN bodies. Norway will contribute 860 million NOK to its work in 2009.

Morten Høglund, Progress Party Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, says he is shocked by the decision. "Iran is an exporter of international terrorism, and still the UN decides to reward the regime by giving it a leading position in UNDP", says Høglund.

In 2003 Libya was elected head of the old Human Rights Commission, and in 2007 Zimbabwe was elected to chair the Commission on Sustainable Development.

"In am deeply concerned by these developments", says Høglund.
