Mark the Norwegian Tax Freedom Day

The Progress Party has again put forward a proposal to calculate and mark the tax freedom day in Norway.  – The people must be reminded and informed of the very high tax level in Norway, says the Progress Party Spokesperson on taxes, MP Christian Tybring-Gjedde.

- The tax freedom day shows how many days a person has to work in a year until he has paid all the taxes and fiscals. Put in a different way: The tax freedom day marks the first day of the year when Norwegians start to work for themselves rather than the tax man.

In 2009 a similar proposal from the Progress Party was turned down by the government. – It is cowardly of the government to refuse to mark this day, and we will keep on fighting this important battle, says the Progress Party MP, Tybring-Gjedde.

According to a calculation done in 2007 by the Norwegian Taxpayer`s Association, the Norwegian tax freedom day is dated to the 29th July, which is the latest of the tax freedom days calculated in 25 countries.

Tybring-Gjedde says it is important that the people in Norway knows the costs of the Norwegian welfare state, because in essence the tax freedom day also aims to answer the fundamental question of how much Norwegians are paying for our government.

- The fact that we spend more of the year working for the state than for ourselves and our families is both shocking and miserable, says Tybring-Gjedde. If the Progress Party and the Conservative Party sit in the government together in the future, we will get this proposal done for sure, Christian Tybring-Gjedde concludes, although the Conservative Party so far has been reluctant to the proposal from the Progress Party.
